The Eco Village is a speculative social housing project that strives for achieving new levels of sustainability in the city, by providing the community the tools necessary to take control of their own lives. This project is based on the future plans of the Gemeente Rotterdam for the Merwehaven, the polluting way we cultivate produce and produce housing and objects, but also on the abuse of immigrant farm workers in Western Europe, who are being tricked into abusive contracts and left on the streets. Because of this, we speculated into a way we could produce food more sustainably, through underwater farming, while also providing a safe space to live and improve yourself, through accessible housing and skill learning workshops. To financially sustain this, the village has a one of a kind restaurant, where you can bring your own farmed produce and watch it being turned into a 5 star meal, or choose to sustain the village by picking a meal produced only on the village's supply.
This project has been done in collaboration with Rakel Dis Sveinsdottir.
